A weak tropical low is expected to move west into the region from the Timor Sea on Wednesday 25 January and then turn south towards the Pilbara or west Kimberley coast on Thursday. It is expected to remain weak as it approaches the Pilbara coast on the weekend. There is a Low likelihood of it developing into a tropical cyclone on Friday 27 January and Saturday 28 January prior to crossing the coast. This then decreases to Very Low on Sunday 29 January.
A trough in the central Indian Ocean is likely to extend into the northwest of the region on the weekend to approximately Christmas Island. A tropical low may form within this trough and the likelihood it developing into a tropical cyclone increases to Low on Tuesday 31 January.
The Western Region refers to the Indian Ocean between Longitudes 90-125E and south of 10S.
