Tropical Cyclone Outlook for the Western Region

Issued at 2:00 pm WST on Sunday 2 April 2023
for the period until midnight WST Wednesday 5 April 2023.

Existing Cyclones in the Western Region:

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Herman has weakened below tropical cyclone intensity over open waters of the Indian Ocean, approximately 720 kilometres west northwest of Exmouth. Ex-tropical Cyclone Herman is expected to continue to weaken as it moves further west. The likelyhood of redevelopment is Very Low.

This system is not expected to impact the Australian mainland, Cocos Islands, or Christmas Island.

Potential Cyclones:


A weak tropical low, 22U, may form as a weak and transient low over open waters well north of the Pilbara coast. If it forms it is expected to move west but remain weak and well offshore. The Likelihood of it being a tropical cyclone is Very Low during the next seven days.

A third tropical low, 23U, may form in the Arafura Sea during Wednesday or Thursday. While 23U may begin to develop as it moves west later in the week, it is expected to remain to the east of the region at least until Saturday 8 April. During Sunday 9 April 23U may move into the northeast of the region and the risk of it being a tropical cyclone in the region is Low.

No other significant tropical lows are expected in the region for the next seven days
